Slow "Preparing Build Tasks" phase
Posted by Yoni Davidson on 22 June 2014 11:02 AM

Problem description:

The "Preparing Build Tasks" phase is taking a very long time in some / all Solution.

Possible Solution:

There can be several causes for this issue.
In case the problem started to happen after upgrading from VS2008 / VS2005 to VS2010 or higher, the reason for this problem is the Devenv.exe. In some cases, the Devenv.exe is slower than the MSBuild when it comes to Dependency calculation and this what causes the slow "Preparing Build Tasks" phase. If this problem indeed started after upgrading from an older Visual Studio version, please contact IncrediBuild support regarding this issue.

The other most common cause is the usage of "Microsoft .NET Fusion" for debugging purposes. The "Microsoft .NET Fusion" causes a vast amount of logging to occur which has a dramatic influence on Devenv during the build and therefore on the "Preparing Build Tasks" phase. Those logging are important for debugging purposes and there is no need to leave them on during the build.

Disabling "Microsoft .NET Fusion" will solve the slow "Preparing Build Tasks" phase.
